Whats a Haight-Ashbury? It’s a sandwich from the NYC restaurant Serendipity 3. You know, the place that has the frozen hot chocolate. It also had a staring role in the 2001 romantic comedy “Serendipity” – which I saw in the movie theater…and loved. I have a thing for romantic comedies. No matter how cheesy, predictable or unreal they may seem I can’t help but love them. Yep, it’s true, I’m that girl
Now that you know the Haight-Ashbury is a sandwich I guess I should now tell you whats in it and why I love it soooooo very much. It starts out with delicious raisin pumpernickel bread, a smear of Russian dressing, some delicious sliced turkey, alfalfa sprouts, tomato, melted muenster cheese and sliced avocado. Now if you are thinking “that sounds gross” don’t judge because you have no idea how delicious it really is. It’s not gross. I can guarantee you that. Everyone of my friends who have made that statement completely changed their tune when they tasted a bite of this sandwich. Trust me….ok?
Since yesterday was a lazy Sunday I decided to make this sandwich at home and it turned out amazing. I left off the sliced tomato and melted muenster because I was out of both but the sandwich was still amazing. To be honest I usually order the sandwich without cheese anyway. I’m weird about cheese on sandwiches. Unless it’s a warm sandwich I don’t like cheese. I know. I’m weird. I also decided to make my own Russian dressing because I was not about to buy the huge bottle that my store stocked. I do not need that much Russian dressing in my house. I have no idea how “authentic” the dressing recipe was but it tasted good. In the end that’s all that really matters…right?
Enjoy!!!
Homemade Haight-Ashbury:
Raisin pumpernickel bread
Russian dressing (recipe to follow)
6 slices smoked peppered turkey – I used Boars Head
Alfalfa sprouts (I used a alfalfa and clover sprout mix)
1 slice muenster cheese.
2 slices tomato
4 slices avocado
Smear Russian dressing on one side of both slices of raisin pumpernickel bread. The amount is up to you. I prefer just enough to moisten the bread but if you prefer more then go for it.
Add sliced turkey and alfalfa sprouts. If using cheese, add cheese and melt slightly in toaster oven. Once melted add tomato and sliced avocado.
Top with other piece of bread and enjoy.

Homemade Russian Dressing:
2 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 teaspoons ketchup
1 teaspoon sweet pickle relish
Add ingredients together and stir until combined. This makes enough dressing for about 4 sandwiches.

I don’t think it sounds gross, I think it sounds delicious!
Are you kidding? It doesn’t sound gross to me at all! I think it sounds delicious, but I am partial to anything topped with avocado:)
This sounds delicious! I love pumpernickel and avacado…yum!!
This sounds anything but gross! I am going to have to try this!
Tragically enough, I have yet to frequent Serendipity which seems like a huge mistake on many levels. Especially given how much I love the movie (I’m a girl also. Who knew.) This sandwich sounds awesome!
My daughters have both been to Serendipity in their travels to NYC – but not me. I expected to find hemp seeds and see the sandwich served in a pot. He he. That should tell you what era I come from!
Everything is better homemade!

Love this sandwich from Serendipity 3! Where does one find raisin pumpernickel though??
