Summertime Tomato Sandwich

This summertime tomato sandwich is full of fresh summer tomatoes, creamy mayonnaise, fresh cracked pepper, and a sprinkling of kosher salt.

If there is one thing I love, it’s a summer tomato. They are so fresh, so sweet, and so incredibly perfect.

I grew up eating summertime tomato sandwiches for almost every single meal. They work for breakfast, make a great lunch, and are perfect for a quick dinner.

This version is my favorite way to make a tomato sandwich – sourdough bread, good mayonnaise, fresh sliced summer tomatoes, kosher salt, and freshly cracked black pepper sprinkled.

It might be the easiest sandwich you have ever seen, but TRUST ME when I say it’s one of the best.

If you have a local farm market around you, make sure to get your tomatoes right when they are fresh. Fresh tomatoes make the best sandwiches!

Ingredients needed

How to make

A tomato sandwich is not hard to make, but it needs the best ingredients to really shine!

For me, that means starting with deliciously toasted sourdough bread. Then, spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread, pile it high with sliced tomatoes, and generously sprinkle with kosher salt and black pepper.

That’s it. How simple is that?

Substitutions and adaptations

If you want to add a little more oomph to a tomato sandwich, there are lots of ways.

Tips and Tricks

For a sandwich like this, use a high-quality mayonnaise such as Duke’s. You want the biggest and best flavors to really make this sandwich pop, so high quality is best.

If you can find them use a heirloom tomato like Cherokee Purple, German Pink, or Black Krim.

I like a really tangy sourdough bread for this recipe. Try my No Yeast Sourdough Bread!
