Cooler Cleanse Review & Giveaway

Bag and bottles dry high resThe giveaway is now closed.  The winner was Diane Farris Brown…congratulations!!! Thank you to everyone who entered!

Have you ever juiced before? Last week was my first time and I’m not gonna lie – it wasn’t at all like I expected.  I have seen my boss juice many times, but I have never taken the plunge – until last week.  I reached out to the great people at Cooler Cleanse and was able to try out a three day juice cleanse.

The process is pretty simple. The day you start your cleanse you are sent eighteen bottles of fresh pressed raw vegetable and fruit juice.  You consume six bottles a day in the order they are labeled. You are consuming a caloric intake of less than 1,200 daily calories and are to consume no solid food or beverages besides water or herbal tea.

The bottles of juice need to be consumed within three days and need to remain refrigerated.  Simple. Right?

Now that the details are explained lets take a look at how my three days on the cleanse went.

279131_10150227733132714_180532357713_7109068_7836161_o

Day One:

Bottle One: Sweet Green Juice – My first thoughts about this juice was that I was pleasantly surprised!  I was scared that because the juice was green it was going to taste like grass.  Not at all. The apples in the juice bring a nice sweetness.

Ingredients: kale, spinach, parsley, watercress, apple

Bottle Two: Pineapple Ginger Juice – This was hands down one of my favorite juices! The pineapple was sweet and the ginger added a nice little burn in the back of the throat.  I’m pretty sure I could drink a bottle of this juice everyday of my life.

Ingredients: pineapple, ginger

Bottle Three: Essential Green Juice – This juice is definitely more heavy on the “green” flavor but I found myself not minding it so much. I liked to serve it over ice to make it go down easier.

Ingredients: cucumber, celery, dandelion greens, watercress, spinach, parsley, kale, pear, lemon, ginger

Bottle Four: Young Coconut Water – This was the best coconut water I have ever tasted! I’m big a coconut water drinker and have never tasted a brand that is as flavorful and coconutty (that’s a word…right?) as Cooler Cleanse.  I thought it actually tasted like the coconuts were roasted.

Ingredients: young coconut water

Bottle Five: Essential Red Juice – I had no problem with this juice. I’m a huge fan of beets so I really enjoyed the subtle earthy flavor and mild sweetness.

Ingredients: carrot, beet, apple, lemon

Bottle Six: Brazil Nut Milk – All day long I was looking forward to the nut milk.  I was craving the creamy and protein packed juice. The milk had a very nutty flavor and was a nice end to the day.

Ingredients: raw Brazil nuts, dates, filtered water

Feelings: I was really pumped to do the cleanse so I was still flying high by the end of the day.  I had resisted all urges to consume solid food (even though I made brownies!) and I felt like a trooper.  I even resisted the urge to lick the batter of the brownies. Which, lets face it, is more of an accomplishment than actually resisting to eat the cooked brownies. The only downside of the day was a massive headache that hit me at night – perhaps lack of caffeine or sugars?  I drank a large glass of water, went to bed and woke up on day two feeling fine!

24228_365869697713_180532357713_3588134_3919229_n

Day Two:

Bottle One: Sweet Green Juice – Woke up. Still liked the juice.  Good start to the day!

Ingredients: kale, spinach, parsley, watercress, apple

Bottle Two: Watermelon Lime Juice – I really liked the flavor of this juice. I had a thought that it would be even better with a drop or two of tequila. However, I resisted the urge and drank it the way it was intended Smile

Ingredients: watermelon, lime

Bottle Three: Essential Green Juice – This day the juice was a little harder to get down but I honestly think it was because I had no experience drinking green juice before. It was a definite shock to my system!

Ingredients: cucumber, celery, dandelion greens, watercress, spinach, parsley, kale, pear, lemon, ginger

Bottle Four: Spicy Lemonade – I really looked forward to trying this bottle.  It sounded like such an interesting combination. I am happy to report I really enjoyed the flavor! It had a fresh lemonade flavor (which I was worried about because I’m not a fan of bottled lemonade) and the little hint of burning cayenne added a nice spice to my day.

Ingredients: lemon, lime, cayenne pepper, raw agave, filtered water

Bottle Five: Essential Red Juice – Still diggin’ the beets. Let Mr.NN try a sip of the juice. He found it gross. Then proceeded to eat chicken wings in front of me. Jerk.

Ingredients: carrot, beet, apple, lemon

Bottle Six: Almond Milk -  Oh yeah! This was a treat for the end of day two! The flavor was out of this world. It has a lovely hint of vanilla that kept me coming back for more. It reminded me of a melted milk shake. I was very sad when the bottle was empty.

Ingredients: raw almonds, vanilla bean, dates, filtered water

Feelings: Day two was a bit harder than day one. I woke up pumped but by the end of the day I wanted pasta. I was starting to miss the ritual of eating and act of chewing. I never felt hungry but still wanted to eat. I even called my fiancée two times telling him I thought I was going to crack. Luckily he talked me off the ledge and I ended up drinking more water and going to bed early.

156162_449066197713_180532357713_5375795_1569116_n

Day Three:

Bottle One: Sweet Greens Juice – The flavor was still delicious and that addition of apple was really genius.

Ingredients: kale, spinach, parsley, watercress, apple

Bottle Two: Grapefruit Mint Juice – I wasn’t so sure about this juice before I tried it.  I love grapefruit. I love mint. But together? Luckily it wasn’t too bad.  It had such a great fresh grapefruit flavor.

Ingredients: grapefruit, mint

Bottle Three: Essential Green Juice – I’m not going to lie. By day three I was was over this juice.  I knew it was healthy for me so I drank it up and chased it with a big bottle of water.

Ingredients: cucumber, celery, dandelion greens, watercress, spinach, parsley, kale, pear, lemon, ginger

Bottle Four: Young Coconut Water – Yes! Another bottle young coconut water. No complains about this sucker. I just need to know where I can get a big bottle I can drink all week long…

Ingredients: young coconut water

Bottle Five: Essential Red Juice – Love me some beets! Even on day three.

Ingredients: carrot, beet, apple, lemon

Bottle Six: Spicy Hemp Milk – Delicious! Very heavy on the cinnamon flavor. I even gave a sip to the kid and she loved it! You know it’s good if a 10 year old kid wants to steal your drink.

Ingredients: raw hemp seeds, dates, cinnamon, ginger, filtered water

Final Feelings: I made it I made it! Three whole days without eating solid food!!! This is something I never thought I could accomplish. I’m not even kidding when I say that. I love food and I love eating.

The best part about the whole experience is what I learned about my body in those three days.  First thing I learned was that I don’t need to stuff myself with food to be satiated. This is a constant problem I have. I eat until I actually feel full. Then I generally have little to no energy for the rest of the evening. I didn’t have this problem while on the cleanse. I kept a nice steady intake (every two hours) of juice (calories!) and never once felt as though I was starving or lightheaded.

I had to spend the last day in NYC so I had to take my juices along with me. I kept them in a little cooler bag that came with my juices. While I wasn’t psyched about carrying around all the juice it honestly wasn’t that bad.  I even got to hang out with Tara of Chip Chip Hooray while in the city.  She also witnessed me tripping on the sidewalk and laying on the ground like an injured seal. Luckily the juice was saved!

I think I would definitely do a cleanse again.  I had my moments where I felt like cracking but I made it. And I loved the way I felt! I felt refreshed, happy and the extra intake of water was awesome for my body.  Since the cleanse I have been drinking lots more water and my body is loving me for it!

One of the biggest things I learned was how I feel about food. My relationship to food. I’m a mindless eater. I eat when I’m bored, I eat when I’m sad, I eat when I’m happy….you get the pattern.  When I couldn’t fill my voids with food I actually had to stop and think about why I wanted to eat. Was I really hungry? Did I really need to eat? Some of the times my body was just craving water.  Some of the times I was going through someone emotional and needed to find a different way of dealing with my problem.  I still haven’t found the perfect outlet for my stress but I can assure you that food is not the best option.

After the cleanse: I’m still feeling good but still need to ask myself “am I really hungry?” before eating.  I give credit to the people who understand their body. My water consumption is up and that does help a lot with my constant hunger.  The next thing I’m hoping of working on is learning a new skill to keep my hand busy while I watch tv at night. A lot of eating goes on while watching tv and maybe if I keep my hands busy (knititng, crochet, etc) I won’t feel that temptation so badly. Also, if you are interested, the first food I ate after the cleanse is pictured above. It was amazing.

Also a quick note from Cooler Cleanse about who should and should not cleanse:

At Cooler Cleanse we like to avoid “shoulds”. But we think anyone who lives in New York City, and the modern world at large, is a candidate for cleansing. Everyone, from health nuts to party animals, is affected by toxins in the air, water, food and environment. Almost everyone is fatigued by stress and the pace of life.

Note: Certain people shouldn’t cleanse. Pregnant and breast-feeding mothers can add fresh-pressed juices to a balanced, whole-food diet to enjoy extra nutrition and energy, but should never restrict solid food intake. If you are diabetic, if you are being treated for, or have just recovered from a serious illness, or if you are taking prescription medication for heart disease, check with your doctor before beginning a juice cleanse. Cleansing can alter the concentration of medication in the blood. We recommend that diabetics cleanse under the supervision of an experienced healthcare practitioner. Children under the age of 18 should not cleanse.

Disclosure: This cleanse was supplied to my by Cooler Cleanse for no charge. However, as always all opinion are 100% my own.

I once tried the lemonade diet where you mix cayenne pepper, syrup, lemon juice and water. I made it about three days and felt absolutely miserable so I had to eat food. This however sounds like a much better alternative! Thanks for sharing!

  2. I’ve never juiced. And…I’ve sort of been a critic. I think I want to try it now because after the pregnancy and breast feeding etc…I feel like my body needs a fresh start!

  80. Gina

I have done a juice cleanse once before (BPC) and really want to try cooler cleanse next. I’m dying to try the watermelon.

  81. Were you worried that not eating solid food for three days would slow down your metabolism? Thus once you started eating solid again your body would hold onto all the calories for dear life? (just curious). I’m not sure a cleanse would be good for me since I work out every day, 1200 calories would not be enough that’s for sure. I’d be interested in trying the juices as snacks or to replace my breakfast though. The green juice sounds like it might be great!

  82. oh i love juice generation! I have their daily detox..well, daily! would love to win a full cooler cleanse! I would love to try the grapefruit mint!

I just started doing smoothies every morning to get more nutrients and my favorite idea that I found which makes smoothies quick and easy in the morning was found on Pinterest- freeze low fat yogurt in ice cube trays and use frozen fruit and a splash of milk. You can mix it up with any type of fruit you would like. I have a bunch pre made in my freezer. Great way to start the day :)

  141. I’d love to try the coconut water! Love it! I’ve never juiced!

  142. Shawna Mattson

I have done a juice cleanse before. My first was actually a Cooler Cleanse and I fell in love with juicing after that. My absolute favorites are the pineapple ginger and the almond nut milk. I had to fight for my almond milk at the end of the evening because my kids wanted to drink it!:) Great company and would love to do another cleanse with them, a win would be great because the budget funds just don’t allow for a cleanse right now. Thanks and loved your comments on your 3-day cleanse journey.

  143. I have never done a juice cleanse, though I have recently fallen in love with Naked’s juice products. I would loooove to try this. Sounds like a challenge. I had looked into doing the cooler cleasnse but on my meager budget at this time, can’t quite afford. I think it would be a challenge of my will-power and emotions and a great way to get in touch with your body.
    Nicely done!

  159. Leah Spatafore

I would be excited to try the watermelon lime juice, and I just checked out their website. I have always wanted to do a juice cleanse!

  160. Leah Spatafore

I do enjoy any smoothie with pomegranate and apple juice! The flavors together taste so good!

  161. i have never done a juice cleanse before but i am definitely curious and would be willing to give it a try. i would love to try the pineapple ginger juice….anything with ginger i love. I am curious…was there any weight loss involved over those few days?

  162. Wow. I have always wanted to try a cleanse but never really had the guts, plus my hubby thinks it is crazy too. I would love to prove him wrong!! I think that the Spicy Hemp Milk sounds so yummy… it almost sounds like a twist on horchata? I would love to try it!

  163. Diane Riedel

I have been dying to try a cleanse because a lot of my friends have tried the master cleanse but I just haven’t felt like I could handle the vinegar and cayenne pepper! But this cleanse looks delicious and totally doable! I would love to try the coconut water drink!!! Thanks so much for having this!

  168. Allison Andresen

I follow you and Cooler cleanse on Twitter and like both of you on facebook!

I really want to try the green juice! I have heard so many mixed things about it. I also never eat kale and I know its a great superfood!

  169. I have never juiced before but I have always wondered about them. I would LOVE to try it out! I think that the Pineapple and Ginger juice would be tasty!

  173. Lacey George

I have never done a juice cleanse before. But I think it sounds amazingly refreshing and healthy. I would LOOOOVVVVEEEE to try it. I think that the Pineapple Ginger would be my favorite!

  174. Becky

Never cleansed before! The coconut water sounds so so good to me. I want to try this!

  175. Audra Bell

I never juiced before and I would like to try watermelon lime.

  176. Michelle T

I did one day of the Cooler Cleanse a la carte to see if I could do it. The juices were so delicious that it was no problem (I didn’t try the beet, though :/ ). Now, with my wedding getting closer, I’m planning a full three day cleanse. Winning it as a give-away would be awesome, though, since I’d prefer not to give my fiance a heart attack when he sees the credit card bill!

  177. Jen

I’ve never juiced although I have been encouraged to do so by different people in my life! Still, REALLY?! I have neither the equipment nor the time – doesn’t it take a horrendous amount of time, not to mention money to obtain the ingredients, juice them, learn what to pair with the spinach & kale so it doesn’t taste nasty, etc.
I’ve never tried a cleanse although at times I’ve been intrigued by them. This, one, though, is the first that actually shoulds like it would be enjoyable. Every juice you talked about sounded delicious, except maybe the Essential Green; so much so that by the end I was wondering where I might find the juices so I could indulge (yes I did just say Indulge)!

Favorite Smoothie – Oh how I love a delicious smoothie on a hot afternoon:
A small, one serving container of your favorite flavor of yogurt
Frozen Strawberries to taste – I like at least a cup (fresh work too, but frozen make it colder & therefore more enticing on a hot day)
1/8 cup of Orange Juice – more if you like your smoothie less thick (or fresh lemon juice or lime juice or a combo of both)
1 cup of frozen raspberries (again, fresh work but won’t make the smoothie as cold & refreshing for a hot day)
    End Result: YUM!

  182. Yay for completing the juicing! I can totally testify to your will power, at least on Day 3. And while I will not be entering to win my own juicing experience…I will admit the coconut water was kinda tasty. ;)

Also you totally were not an injured seal. Maybe a slightly gimpy one?

  183. Yes, I’ve juiced. In fact, it’s a staple meal in our house. Not everyday, but a few days a week we have fresh squeezed juice for one of our meals. I’d love to try the raw cleanse.

And, GREAT job sticking to the 3 day cleanse. I know that can be ROUGH!!!! The emotional junk that we bury behind food can stay hidden forever. Or can it? I know we try ;)

  184. Julia

    watermelon lime!

  185. Had never considered doing a juice cleanse before reading this… like you, I just like chewing too much! But I love your review and am very intrigued. Plus, I should be able to do anything for just three days -right? I’m thinking if I give it a go, I’ll ween myself off caffeine first. Pineapple and Ginger sounds the best to me – I love love love fresh ginger!

  186. Yes, I’ve cleansed! I’m most excited to try their watermelon and lime juice, yum!

  187. I just followed you on Twitter! Great to “meet” you and from one foodie to another, I look forward to following all of your fun shenanigans!

  188. mary a.

I have actually attempted a juice before, but due to family circumstances was unable to finish it. this is a great opportunity for me to try again!!

  189. Sonia

I loved reading your blog about the cleanse experience. There are so many people on set that juice, and love it. I never have dared to, since I love food so much. Both cooking it and eating it… Yummmmm.
Anyhow, after the holiday season, I am seriously needing a little help. My jeans are so TIGHT not fun. Thankfully at work no one notices, since I wear scrubs on set, I work on Private Practice. Watch it, ABC :-)
And I am also feeling tiered and sluggish. I am thinking that I am a perfect candidate for the cleanse. Love love love all the ingredients you mentioned are in all the juices. I make juices at home, one of my favorites is Apple, Mint, Pear, & Spinach pretty tasty. Hope to win this cooler cleanse, hoping it will kick start my Year! Thank you for sharing.

Hi Sonia! I had to chuckle because I actually work for Audra McDonald! I told her that you commented and told me to tell you hello :) Good luck in the contest!

  195. I’ve never tried anything from Cooler Cleanse but recently I’ve seen a bunch of posts about the brand. I went on this weird juice fast kick when I was 14 and my diet-crazed aunt was singing praises of it’s promised healthy goodness. Though, I don’t remember if I even did end up juice fasting. I was probably still on her Atkins craze. Wow, thinking back, who let a 14 year old do those things?!
Either way – I’d be thrilled to try it.

  196. Stacey

I’ve never done a cleanse like this, but I’ve tried others that incorporate food. I’d like to try the Hemp Milk or Sweet Greens, but I’m curious about the taste of most the drinks!

By the way, I have a FB page called: Dish it out! I started it a few weeks ago, to let people interact about their favorite foods, diets and share special eateries all over the world- especially NY. It would be great for me to spread the word regarding the health benefits of cleansing and the use of your products- which I’m looking forward to trying…Robin T.

  221. amy

I’ve never done a juice or cleanse diet before. I’d love to try the hemp milk, I love cinnamon so it sounds good to me!

  222. I love juices and smoothies! However, I’ve NEVER done a juice cleanse before! As a holistic health coach, tsk tsk to me! It’s something I’m very much looking forward to, and, now that I’ve discovered Cooler Cleanse & you Nutmeg Nanny, maybe it’ll happen sooner than later! I am a huge fan of my loaded greens juices/smoothies but the Spicy Hemp Milk looks like it is a powerhouse of fun and spice! You can be sure I’ll be checking you out and following on FB and Twitter. I have always struggled with my eating habits and my weight. I manage to maintain, but it’s hard work. However, since the holidays I am having a REALLY hard time getting back on track. I think this cleanse would be just thie thing to get me motivated again. I think the beet juice that you liked sounds amazing!

  231. I have done a cleanse before, but I was drinking broth and I felt so weak by the third or fourth day that I had to stop the cleanse early. I think these juices would be great because they have more calories than the broth. I would love to try the Essential Red juice because I think that I don’t like beets, but I know that I should give them another chance. Thanks!

  250. Jennifer Moon

I’ve never cleansed. I heard great things from my sister who highly recommends Cooler Cleanse over other juice cleanses that she has tried. I’m looking to do the cooler cleanse to kick start my diet for my upcoming trip to Hawaii!

  260. I am super excited to try the pineapple ginger juice. their watermelon lime was is excellent.

  261. No need to enter me in the giveaway but this was very interesting!

  262. These juices sound so good. I would want to drink them even without juicing. I have never juiced before but have heard about and wanted to try it but have been too chicken. I definitely think my body could use it with all of the junk I eat. I would like to try the Young Coconut Water, sounds very yummy:)

  263. Amanda

i’ve tried the advocare cleanse and did NOT like it. it didn’t have the *ahem* affects on me that it did my cohorts that i did it with (they lost 5 lbs immediately… i was clogged up, physically in pain and bloated!) and it tasted AWFUL. it was grass.

also, i’ve tried just protein shake cleanses but never really a juice cleanse. I would love to try this!! thanks for introducing me to it, now i hope i WIN!

  264. CB Mauro

I’ve never juiced because deep down I’m a real chicken when it comes to things like this. I would be stoked to try the Coconut Water or the Almond Milk flavors. I would be worried about being able to choke down anything with Beets in it…..

  265. CB Mauro

Also- what an idiot I am! I’m already following you on Pinterest and I didn’t even realize it! FML!

  266. I have never juiced before but these juices sound worth a try. Most sound yummy, but the watermelon lime one sounds best!

  276. Jessica

I’m super interested to see how I would feel after this…I would love to try the green ones, even though they kind of make me nervous!

  277. Jessica

My favorite smoothie “recipe” is super easy. Two bananas, half a can of pineapple (in real juice, but I prefer fresh during the summer!), a splash of OJ and some ice. I have it for breakfast almost every day!

  278. keri

My husband is a personal trainer and ironman triathlete. He is always telling his clients to juice. He juices two times a day at least. I own two businesses and have two small children. I really want to juice but I always run out of time and think I will do it tomorrow. I would love the opportunity to try this company and have it all at my finger tips.
I am most excited about trying all the nut milks. I have bought a few at the health food store …they are ok. However, after reading your descriptions, I am very excited to try them from cooler cleanse.
    cheers, Keri

  279. I liked your FB Page My name is Vanessa Mentor

  280. Nissan

I tried CoolerCleanse before, but did not use the nut milks. The Brazil Nut is something I must try…also on my cleanse there was no coconut water so this time around it’s a drink I would like to include. You can buy the juices at any Juice Generation in NYC and save the shipping costs–but of course then you don’t get the “cool” cooler bag!
