BBQ Hawaiian Pizza

This bbq Hawaiian pizza is the perfect use for all that leftover ham. Tangy bbq sauce topped with melted cheese, red onions, pineapple, and ham.

Nothing pleases a crowd more than pizza!

Easy to make, and even easier to eat, this BBQ Hawaiian pizza is packed full of flavor, and hits all the right spots: sweet from the pineapple, salty from the ham, savory and sticky BBQ sauce, and a kick from the red onions. 

Instead of using standard tomato sauce, I turned up the volume and used my favorite BBQ sauce as the base on this pizza. 

Feel free to use your favorite store-bought or homemade BBQ sauce, too! You can’t go wrong!

This is also a great way to use up the ham you may have leftover from Easter dinner.

Not a fan of ham? Why not turn this into a Hawaiian bbq chicken pizza! All you need is some shredded chicken breasts or a shredded rotisserie chicken and add to the top!

Instructions on how to make Hawaiian BBQ pizza

Making homemade pizza doesn’t have to be scary or hard! I often think of it as being more accessible than ordering in mostly because I get to add on all the toppings without all the fees!

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F and prepare a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper.
  2. Spread dough onto the silicone baking mat or parchment paper and set aside. If you like to make pizza on a pizza stone or pizza steel, feel free to use that method. In fact, if you have an outdoor pizza oven, just think how beautiful this pizza would look on a pizza peel!
  3. Spread the BBQ sauce over the dough, leaving a 1-inch of BBQ sauce clear from the edge.
  4. Top with 1 cup shredded cheese, diced ham, pineapple chunks, and sliced red onion.
  5. Top with the remaining 1/2 cup cheese and lightly kosher salt and pepper the crust.
  6. Add to the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted on the top.
  7. If desired, sprinkle with chopped cilantro and extra BBQ sauce once fully cooked.

Change it up!

If you’re not a fan of mozzarella cheese, feel free to use fontina or cheddar cheese. 

Fontina will be a more melty cheese, while cheddar will have a sharper bite.

Different topping options

Don’t have any leftover ham? No worries! Any ham from your local deli will work fine here. 

And if you don’t enjoy ham, feel free to use cooked bacon, salami, or pepperoni. They will all bring a salty-meaty component to the pizza. 

Cilantro can be divisive. Feel free to omit it if you’re not a fan. 

Going gluten-free?

This BBQ Hawaiian pizza works excellent on a gluten-free crust!

Save time and make ahead

You could purchase pre-baked pizza crusts from the grocery store or bake off your own up to a day before serving.

Store them in a cool, dry place.

Because I used a tangy bbq sauce in place of traditional pizza sauce, ti gives this pizza the perfect zing. And the pineapple paired with the salty ham is classic, and delicious, combination!

Storage and leftovers for BBQ Hawaiian pizza

Leftover pizza can be stored in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. 

Reheating is as easy as simply microwaving for 2-3 minutes on a microwave-safe plate, or on the stovetop in a pan set to low heat.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound raw pizza dough
  • 1/3 cup bbq sauce
  • 1-1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup diced ham
  • 1 cup diced fresh pineapple
  • 1/4 thinly sliced red onion
  • Kosher salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped cilantro

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F and prepare a baking sheet with a Silpat liner or parchment paper.
  • Spread out dough onto the Silpat and set aside.
  • Spread the bbq sauce over the dough leaving a 1-inch from the edge clear of bbq sauce.
  • Top with 1 cup shredded cheese, diced ham, diced pineapple, and sliced red onion.
  • Top with the remaining 1/2 cup cheese and lightly kosher salt and pepper the crust.
  • Add to the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the crust is brown and the cheese is melted on the top.
  • Once fully cooked sprinkle with chopped cilantro and extra bbq sauce if desired.
