Dark and Stormy

This classic dark and stormy is the perfect summertime cocktail. Packed full of dark rum, lime, lime bitters and super spicy ginger beer. It’s refreshing and tropical all at the same time. Don’t skimp on getting yourself a good bottle of ginger beer – totally worth it! 

Dear black rum, where have you been all my life?

I used to love rum. Then I didn’t. Now I love it again. I blame my short stint on hating rum do to the Halloween of 2005. It’s where I learned (again) to never drink on an empty stomach. So bad. But, to be fair I was drinking vodka flavored rum which in general should just never be a thing.

I gave into my rum craving only due to the fact that it was going to get mixed with spicy ginger beer and a couple dashes of lime bitters.  I know, I can’t stop talking about bitters. If you’re new to the world of bitter just know they are amazing and can take a cocktail from “yeah, it’s pretty good.” to “POUR ME ANOTHER ONE!” 

The awesome folks at Scrappy’s Bitters let me test out their bitters and they are offering to let me give away two sample boxes! If you’re into cocktail making (which I hope you are!) you are going to love the flavors they offer – celery, cardamom, lavender, grapefruit, orange, chocolate, lime and aromatic. Plus their bitters are made from mostly all organic ingredients, no artificial flavors, chemicals or dyes. There is no reason your cocktails cannot be made from quality ingredients. Am I right?

If you have never had bitters it’s amazing what they can do to a drink. I like a few shakes of bitters to a drink like a pinch of salt to a dish. It’s rounds out the flavors and finishes off the dish. Or, in this case, drink. 

Now, if you have never had a dark and stormy it a flavorful drink that a few shakes of lime bitters make it even better. It’s a simple concoction made with black rum, lime and the spiciest ginger beer I can find. I love the spicy burn that ginger can bring to a cocktail.

Dark and Stormy

Yield: 1 drink

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 0 minutes

Total Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

• 3 dashes lime bitters
• 1 lime wedge
• 4 ounces ginger beer
• 3 ounces black rum

Directions:

Fill a short cocktail glass with ice. Add in bitters, squeeze of lime and ginger beer.

Slowly pour rum on top to create a "stormy" look. Stir to combine.
