Apple Butter Onion Chicken Burgers cut in half.

I’m straddling this weird time of the year where I’m still half craving comfort food and half craving light spring food.

I want a big hearty burger with a fresh side salad or pot roast with spring peas. You get it. BUT it’s still basketball season so my husband declares that “man food” is still in season.

But really that means he wants a burger and I’m happy to oblige because I’m a burger girl through and through.

Now, if you have been reading my blog for a while you will know that I LOVE making chicken burgers.

While I will always love red meat, I think chicken burgers are crazy delicious.

They can be packed with TONS of flavor and always turn out juicy and delicious.

So, this time around I went with Musselman’s apple butter to bring in some flavor. You know I love this stuff but OMGOMGOMG in a burger it’s life-changing!

Plus I made apple butter caramelized onions because the more apple butter the merrier.

Right?

I also really love the little dose of sweetness the apple butter brings to the mix.

I also seasoned the meat with fresh minced cilantro, cumin, and smoked paprika.

It’s seriously a flavor party packed between 2 buns.

Oh, and because I love cheese I threw on a little smoked Gouda cheese as well.

Want to know something funny?

I used to HATE smoked Gouda with a deep and fiery passion.

Then all of a sudden I didn’t hate it. How weird is that?

Either way, I’m happy I like it now because it was the PERFECT fit for these apple butter onion chicken burgers!

Total Time 35 minutes
Servings 4 full size burgers or 6 sliders

Ingredients

For burgers:

  • 1 pound ground chicken
  • 1/2 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup Musselman’s apple butter
  • 2 tablespoons finely minced cilantro
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper
  • 1 cup grated smoked Gouda cheese
  • 4 full-size burger buns or 6 slider buns

For onions:

  • 1 large sweet onion
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Kosher salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup Musselman’s apple butter

Instructions

For burgers:

  • In a bowl add ground chicken, panko bread crumbs apple butter, cilantro, cumin, smoked paprika, kosher salt, and ground pepper.
  • Mix together until combined. I use my hands to do this as I find it the easiest option.
  • Shape into 6 slider or 4 full-size burgers.
  • If cooking your burgers on a grill preheat your grill to medium heat and grill until fully cooked – about 8-10 minutes depending on size. Top each burger with cheese and let melt.
  • If cooking your burgers in a pan heat 2 tablespoons oil over medium heat and cook until one side is browned, flip, and continue cooking until fully cooked and brown on each side. Top each burger with cheese and let melt.
  • After the burgers are cooked place on buns and top with apple butter onions.

For onions:

  • Remove the papery skin from the onion and trim off the top and bottom.
  • Cut in half and thinly slice.
  • In a 12-inch skillet add olive oil and set over medium heat.
  • Once the oil is hot add in the onions, kosher salt, and pepper.
  • Cook for about 20 minutes or until the onions are soft and caramelized.
  • Add in the apple butter and stir to combine.
  • Keep warm while your burgers cook.
