How to pick out a ripe cantaloupe

You wouldn’t want a dry, sour melon for this breakfast. So how do you ensure that you’re buying a ripe cantaloupe at the grocery store?

There are a few tricks I use when I want to make sure the melon is as ripe as possible.

First, always avoid melons that have brown or soft spots on them. This usually means they have over-ripened and may be rotten in those areas.

Next, give the melon a sniff! You should be able to smell a strong, sweet, musky scent.

Feel how heavy the melons are. Melons that look heavy for their size often indicate that they’re juicy.

Ripe cantaloupes should be uniformly golden in color. Green areas on cantaloupes indicate that they are not ripe yet.

Additional toppings for cantaloupe bowls

I love Grape Nuts for its nutrients and super satisfying crunch, but feel free to use your favorite store-bought or homemade granola, chopped nuts, or even dried coconut!

Make it your way

This recipe is so versatile, there are so many ways to change it up and make it your favorite.

You can easily substitute the cantaloupe for honeydew! It’s still a great bowl shape, and juicy and sweet.

Another way to change up this recipe is to use your favorite yogurt, whether that be sugar-free, or dairy-free varieties. All varieties will work here.

Not a fan of yogurt? Try it with cottage cheese!
