Hot Lobster Roll

This Connecticut style hot lobster roll recipe is packed full of fresh lobster that has been tossed in a lemon cilantro butter. Say hello to lobster happiness.

My husband is from Connecticut and always talks about his love for hot lobster rolls. In fact, he always likes to remind me that hot buttered lobsters rolls are the BEST type of lobster roll there is. While both type are good {it’s lobster, how can it not be good?} I will have to agree with him on this one. Hot and buttered is the way to go.

We don’t make a lot of lobster in our house because it’s such a process BUT I just found out last weekend that the grocery store will steam the lobster for you! The lobster was priced at $9.99 a pound and for no extra charge they will steam and cool your lobster. Ummm yes. I will totally talk them up on their offer. It takes me almost 30 minutes just to heat up the pot for lobster boiling so if I don’t have to clean that I’m more than happy.

Since my husband knew he was getting lobster rolls he was more than happy to clean and pick off all the meat. For the most part lobster is pretty easy to clean and it’s nothing compared to the hassle of trying to clean crab.

Plus I’m super high maintenance in this department and have zero desire to clean lobster.

If you feel like spending lots of money you could also buy store bought picked lobster. But yeah, it’s crazy expensive. I took a quick look at it was $18.99 for a HALF POUND.

Hell. No.

I will gladly let my husband take 20 minutes of his day to clean the lobster for me.

Aren’t I nice?

Now before any Connecticut hot lobster roll residents come at me with pitch forks I will address the giant elephant (giant lobster?) in the room. Yes, I added lemon and cilantro to the butter. The traditionalist will say this is wrong. That there should be nothing but plain butter  on a hot buttered lobster roll.

However, I really dig the fresh lemon and cilantro flavor. Lemon naturally pairs with lobster and cilantro is just a big bunch of summertime flavor.

Trust me, just give it a try.

If your not a fan of cilantro I think tarragon, chives or thyme would all be an awesome substitute!

Connecticut Style Hot Lobster Roll with Cilantro Lemon Butter

This Connecticut style hot lobster roll recipe is packed full of fresh lobster that has been tossed in a cilantro lemon butter. Say hello to lobster happiness.

Yield: 4-6 rolls

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 (1-1/2 pound) steamed lobsters
  • 1 stick (4 ounces) salted butter
  • 1/3 cup minced cilantro
  • 1/2 lemon zested and juiced
  • 4-6 New England split top buns

Directions:

Clean lobsters and pick out all the meat. Try to leave the claws whole but give the tail a little chop to break up the meat. Keep the meat cold until ready to use.

In a small saucepan set over low heat slowly melt the butter.

Once melted add in cilantro, lemon zest and lemon zest.

Add in lobster and let sit over low heat while the lobster slightly warms in the butter.

While the butter warms lightly toast the outside of the buns in a toaster oven or under the broiler of your oven. You can also lightly oil the outside of the bread and toast in a pan as well.

Stuff the lobster into the toasted rolls and drizzle the tops with any leftover butter in the pan.

Eat the rolls hot with a cold beer.

Note: I bought fresh lobsters from the store and they steamed them for me at the store for no extra cost! Just ask if your store does this. It saves a lot of time and cleanup to have someone else do the steaming.
