This summertime tomato sandwich is packed full of fresh summer tomatoes, creamy mayonnaise, fresh cracked pepper, and a sprinkling of kosher salt.
If there is one thing I love it’s a summer tomato.
So fresh, so sweet, and so incredibly perfect.
I grew up eating summertime tomato sandwiches for each and every single meal.
They work for breakfast, make a great lunch, and are perfect for a quick dinner.
This version is my favorite way to make a tomato sandwich – sourdough bread, really good mayonnaise, fresh sliced summer tomatoes, kosher salt, and a sprinkling of freshly cracked black pepper.
It might be the easiest sandwich you have ever seen but TRUST ME when I say it’s one of the best

The best tomatoes for a tomato sandwich
My personal favorite hands down is a fresh summer heirloom tomato.
And if you want to get really specific my favorite heirloom tomato is a Cherokee purple. I don’t see this variety often at the grocery store but I do see it frequently at farmer’s markets and local vegetable stands.
The biggest thing to remember is that this sandwich is all about the tomato.
That means you want a fresh super flavorful tomato. That also means that sadly during the winter months I put this sandwich on hold. Summer tomatoes beat out winter tomatoes every. single. time.
The best mayonnaise to use
Ok, this is definitely a personal preference but hands down my favorite store-bought mayonnaise is Duke’s. It’s just the right amount of tangy and works perfectly when paired with tomatoes.
Now, unfortunately, Duke’s is not available in all of the US or around the world. So my second favorite is Hellman’s.
Hellman’s can usually be found in almost any grocery store in the condiment aisle.
There is of course the option for Miracle Whip too. I actually grew up with mostly Miracle Whip in the house so while I do not dislike Miracle Whip I do think mayonnaise is a better choice for a tomato sandwich.
Do I need to toast my bread?
I personally think YES, toasted bread is a must!
It brings a slight crunch to a sandwich that is naturally very soft.
The best bread for tomato sandwich recipes
While any bread you have on hand will work my favorite is sourdough.
I love the flavor and the way it toasts up.
If you’re not a fan of sourdough bread, white bread is just as good.
Substatutions and adaptations
Of course!
A lot of folks like to add cheese, lettuce, and even sweet onion.
I like mine plain and simple but that doesn’t mean you have too! Just don’t forget the sprinkle of kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper – that is key to a good summertime tomato sandwich!
