Peanut Butter Oreo Ice Cream

This homemade peanut butter Oreo ice cream is made with homemade vanilla ice cream and packed full of peanut butter Oreos. If you love ice cream, Oreos and peanut butter this dessert is for you!

I have a really bad relationship with Oreos. I absolutely cannot keep them in the house or I will just eat them all. I’m not even kidding. In a few days that package will be gone. My husbands laughs at my lack of self control. I seriously think they must put something in those bad boys because there is no other cookie that does that to me.

Then a few weeks ago I saw they came out with a peanut butter Oreos.

Sweet baby J they are trying to kill me.

I held off on buying a package for awhile and then decided I needed to buy some for homemade ice cream. But really we all know I bought that first package and ate it in one day. So I had to go back to the store and buy more.

I told you. I cannot be trusted when there are Oreos in the house.

I should also mention OXO sent me some fun ice cream making goodies so it’s really their fault that I had to make this ice cream. Plus, as previously mentioned, I really needed a good reason to buy some peanut butter Oreos.

I have to share what OXO sent me because I love their products and have been using these goodies nonstop!

This ice cream was so simple to make that I’m not sure why I don’t make homemade ice cream more often. If it wasn’t for the fact that my ice cream maker bowl takes up so much space in my freezer I would probably make (and eat) ice cream every single day.

Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise I don’t have a lot of room in my freezer to keep my bowl frozen 24/7.

Or I could just buy this totally awesome ice cream maker and then I would never have to worry about planning ahead.

Yes. I like that idea best.

Yield: 1-1/2 quarts

Prep Time: 45 minutes + cooling time

Cook Time: 30 minutes

Total Time: 75 minutes + plus cooling time

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups half and half
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 8 egg yolks
  • 9 ounces sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 (13 ounce) box mini peanut butter Oreos, lightly crushed

Vanilla ice cream recipe adapted from Alton Brown

Directions:

Set a medium saucepan over medium heat. Pour in half and half and heavy cream. Simmer the mixture, stirring every so often, until the mixture is warmed. Remove from heat and set aside.

In a large mixing bowl add egg yolks and whisk until smooth. Slowly pour in sugar and whisk until combined.

Add in a small amount of cream mixture to the egg mixture and whisk until combined. Slowly add in more cream until the egg mixture is warmed. Continue whisking in the cream until it's all been added.

Add the mixture back into the saucepan and set over low heat. Stir constantly until the mixture has thickened and reached 175 degrees.

Remove the mixture from the heat and pour into a storage container. Let cool on the counter for 30 minutes, stir in vanilla extract, cover and let cool in the refrigerator overnight.

Pour into an ice cream maker and process according to the manufacturer's directions. Once the mixture reaches soft serve texture stir in Oreo cookies and add to a freezer safe container. Freeze for at least 4 hours before serving.
