Old Fashioned Banana Pudding Ice Cream

This old fashioned banana pudding ice cream is creamy and dreamy and tastes like your favorite southern dessert – banana pudding! Made with fresh bananas, banana pudding, and crispy vanilla wafers. You’ll love this summertime treat!

Today’s recipe is brought to you by Kristen of Dine & Dish. Kristen cooks up delicious looking food and shares heartwarming stories about her family. She has four kids and still has time to make beautiful (and delicious!) food and take amazing pictures. I’m not sure where she gets her energy but I will gladly take some!

Homemade ice cream… there’s nothing quite like it, is there? I remember as a child, the promise of licking the beater if I agreed to be the one who sat on the wooden ice cream maker while my dad or mom cranked the handle.

It was an arborous process, but the reward was well worth it. Getting to be the first to taste whatever flavor of ice cream was being created was a prize worth sitting in the sun and being bored for a while for.

When Brandy asked me to participate in her Ice Cream Social, I immediately knew what kind of ice cream I wanted to create. While on vacation in Estes Park, CO recently, we were treated to the most incredible old fashioned banana pudding ice cream. I’d never tasted anything like it before. Cold and creamy ice cream with chunks of fresh bananas and bits of the vanilla wafer.

It’s a favorite old-fashioned dessert in frozen form and boy is it good!

My secret ingredient in milkshakes has always been a tablespoon or two of instant pudding mix. Seriously, it sounds weird, but the instant pudding mix adds a depth of flavor you just can’t get without it.

I decided to see if I could do the same thing with the old fashioned banana pudding ice cream recipe I created and sure enough… the banana flavor ended up being so full and vibrant. My kids nominated this as the “best ice cream they’ve ever tasted”.

I hope you enjoy it!
