This post is sponsored by Wyman’s of Maine. As always all opinions are 100% my own.

I have a huge love for all things chicken wings. I have already made baked garlic buffalo wings, cool ranch chicken wings, spicy peanut butter chicken wings AND buttermilk Southwestern chicken wings and now I’m all over your feed with wild blueberry bbq chicken wings. Holy heck! I know you’re thinking to yourself “hey crazy stop making bbq sauce with fruit” but I simply can’t stop! Plus wild blueberries make the best-colored sauce on the planet. Seriously, look at that color!

But I didn’t use just any old wild blueberries I used my favorite wild blueberries – Wyman’s of Maine. They are perfectly sweet and so teeny tiny they border on adorable. Plus when they combine with honey and lime they make one heck of a bbq sauce. Oh, and they are frozen within 24 hours of harvest which means they are perfectly juicy and delicious every single time.

The best part about making fruit based bbq sauces is that they take almost no time to throw them together. I just simmer gently on the stovetop, add to my Vitamix to puree and then add back to the pan to cook down till thick. You could even make it days before you wanted to make your chicken wings.

So not only is this sauce stuffed with wild blueberries it’s also sweetened with honey. As much as I’m not a fan of bugs that can sting me I have a serious love for honey bees. Not only do they provide us liquid gold nectar we call honey BUT they need our help! In 2006, researchers started to notice that colonies of honey bees were dying off of what they now call Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Since then Wyman’s has been trying to help keep these honey bees alive! Without bees we get no berries and that would be a very sad thing. Wyman’s has helped a lot financially but that is not always an option for every household. So want to know some ways you can help the honey bees?

  • plant honey bee friendly plants
  • stop using pesticides
  • Become a citizen scientist by participating in The Great Sunflower Project’s backyard bee count
  • Join Pollinator.org and support the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign (NAPCC)

Now save our bees! They seriously need our help.

Ok, now that I bummed you all out about the honey bees (but for real they need our help!) it’s time to get back to these wild blueberry bbq chicken wings! After I basted these wings and grilled them I served them with a sprinkling of honey granules, Aleppo chili powder and lime zest. These wings are flavor packed, sticky and 100% perfect for summer.

  • 24 chicken wing drumettes
  • Kosher salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup onion, diced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons grated ginger

  • For topping: honey granules, Aleppo chile powder and lime zest

Directions:

Preheat your grill to medium heat and season chicken wing drumettes lightly with kosher salt and pepper, set aside.

In a skillet set over medium-high heat add olive oil. Once the oil is hot add in the onion and cook until soft. Add in the garlic, grated ginger, lemongrass paste, chile paste and saute for another minute just until fragrant.

Add in the wild blueberries, honey, balsamic vinegar and lime zest. Cook just until the berries start to soften and release their juice.

Add the ingredients from the skillet to you blender and carefully puree until smooth.

Add the pureed mixture back to your skillet and cook over medium heat until thick and reaches your desired texture. Taste and season with kosher salt and pepper, to taste.

Add the chicken drumettes to the grill and cook for about 25 minutes until fully cooked. Half way through cooking baste the chicken with the wild blueberry bbq sauce. Make sure you don't put your bbq sauce on too early or you run the risk of burning the sauce.

After the wings have cooked sprinkle with honey granules, Aleppo chile powder and lime zest for serving.
