Heyyyyyyyy you guyssssssssss! It’s football time! This is my favorite time of the year because it means I get to eat. all. the. football. food. The sport, in general, I care a very little bit about. When there is a game on TV I pretty much zone it out while dreaming of the time the game is over so I can put on a Lifetime movie. I know, I constantly talk about Lifetime movies but they are so good. You really need to get on board with that!

Now, I know for me I normally think of game day food as chili or something else warm and comforting but I’m taking all that warmth and savory goodness into a sandwich. I LOVE baked sandwiches and these babies are packed full of delicious fall flavor.

The sandwich starts with a maple mayonnaise and then it’s topped with sliced turkey, (also a great use for leftover Thanksgiving turkey!) sliced Land O Lakes® Deli American, caramelized onions and crispy bacon. Then I topped it all with a delicious butter/brown sugar/onion mixture that brings BIG TIME flavor to these sandwiches.

When I made these sandwiches my husband walked into the kitchen and was all “umm…can I eat these?” To which I was all “No! I still need to photograph them! You know you don’t get hot food right out of the oven in this house.” Haha, that sounds so sad but 100% true. Don’t worry – they still tasted awesome not piping hot.

These baked turkey bacon onion sandwiches are the perfect party food. Made with maple mayo and lots of bacon, caramelized onions, cheesy Deli American and turkey. You'll love these delicious sandwiches!

Yield: 12 mini sandwiches

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 50 minutes

Total Time: 65 minutes

Ingredients:

For mayo:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup

For sandwiches:

  • 6 thick sliced bacon, diced
  • 1 sweet onion, thinly sliced
  • 12 mini potato buns
  • 1/2 pound thinly sliced turkey
  • 12 slices Land O Lakes® White Deli American

For topping:

  • 5 tablespoons Land O Lakes® Unsalted Butter
  • 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons onion flakes

Directions:

For mayo:
Mix together ingredients and set aside.

For sandwiches:
In a large skillet set over medium-high heat add the bacon and cook until crispy. Remove bacon with a slotted spoon onto a paper towel lined plate, set side.

In the same pan leave about 2 tablespoons of the bacon fat (dispose of the rest) and add in the onions. Cook until soft and golden in color, remove from heat and set aside.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees and spray a small jelly roll sized pan lightly with non-stick spray.

Spread an equal amount of mayonnaise on the bottom piece of each roll and place the bottom of the buns into either a 9x13 baking dish or rimmed baking sheet.
Top the bottoms with turkey, cheese, onions, bacon and then top with the tops of the buns. Pour the butter brown sugar topping mixture over top the buns making sure to try and cover each bun evenly.

Bake for about 20 minutes or until browned and slightly toasty on top.

For topping:
Set a small skillet over medium heat and add butter. Once the butter melts add in the dark brown sugar, Dijon mustard and onion flakes. Cook until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is cohesive, about 2 minutes.

Yeah hot food out of the oven doesn’t happen in my house much either! I don’t know that I would be able to resist these.

What’s not to love about all of these flavors together? Especially that touch of maple and brown sugar. I bet it enhances all of the other flavors beautifully!
