I visited Chile as a guest of Chile Travel. I was not paid but I was given a free trip.

If you follow me on Instagram or Snapchat you might remember I visited Chile back in December. It was a trip of a lifetime and I had a blast! Now, if I’m being honest going to Chile was never on my radar but once I got there I was sold. Plus, it was winter in New York and summer in Santiago so it was nice to be warm vs. freeeeeeeeeeezing.

This month I plan on sharing a few of the different things I did while in Chile. First, I wanted to share one of my favorite activities I did while in Santiago – the food and market walking tour with Foody Chile! Colin, our guide, was beyond amazing. He had an answer to every single question we asked and knew exactly how to keep us interested. Plus he fit right into our quirky group by laughing at our cheesy jokes and using as much sarcasm as we did.

We started out by hitting up a few of the street markets while he told us about the history of each building and even pointed out which buildings have the cleanest bathrooms. Which, let’s face it, can be one of the biggest tips EVER! (NYC fun fact – The Plaza Hotel has some of the nicest public restrooms. Go in the front door, go through the doors on the left, go up the stairs on the right, walk past the bar and be rewarded with a clean fancy bathroom.)

I mostly loved how he knew the way to get around each and every market even though it was a maze of vegetables, fruit, fish and meat. Did you know avocados are huge in Chile? They were onto the deliciousness of avo toast years before it was even a thing in the US! In fact, when I was talking to another guide she giggled at the American obsession with avocado toast and let me know almost all Chileans eat avocado toast in the morning.

I learned that street food isn’t really that big in Chile but there are a few traditional street foods like mote con huesillo. If you have never heard of mote con huesillo before don’t worry – neither had I! It’s an odd little combination of re-hydrated peaches, peach nectar, and husked wheat. It’s oddly refreshing and even though it’s not something you would traditionally find the streets of New York it works.

There is also a large Peruvian population in Chile so naturally, there were a lot of Peruvian influences in the market. In fact, as we were walking across the bridge to the markets there were Peruvian women selling ceviche out of shopping carts. Listen, if it was not a sunny warm day I would have been ALL OVER that ceviche. Street food is my weakness!

Yes, even street food from a shopping cart.

I also caught a pretty good picture of some Peruvian street dancers. I’m lucky I can slow dance correctly with my husband let alone dance all fancy. Total talent!

Now, back to the tour. We made a few stops around the markets to get a taste of everything they had to offer. This was our official eating/drinking list.

Oh and want to know something super awesome about the markets? They are full of adorable cats! I’m sure they help with rodent and bug population BUT they also add a nice dose of cuteness. Of course, I couldn’t resist snapping a photo of one of those adorable little kitties.

If you’re planning a trip to Chile don’t skip over spending a few days in Santiago. It’s a city full of rich history that deserves to be explored. And if you love food you have to do a food walking tour. It’s my new favorite way to explore cities (I just did 2 in San Fransico!) and I think you’ll love exploring the foodie side of Santiago. Plus Colin is an amazing tour guide!

Love this. Reminds me of Spain. How vibrant, colorful and amazing types of foods you can find with street vendors. Street foods are simply the best!
