Sandwich, Submarine or Hoagie?

No matter what you call it, this Italian classic is something you need in your recipe repertoire. And I’ll tell you how to make sub sauce that rivals your local sub shop.

Italian sandwiches are perfect for beach days, summer picnics, game day, and so much more.

I personally think a sandwich is the perfect outdoor food. I used delicious Italian meats, roasted red peppers, spicy baby arugula, homemade Italian sub dressing, and Land O Lakes® 4 Cheese Italian Blend.

Submarine Dressing Recipe

Homemade sub sauce is super easy to make and adds a nice burst of Italian herb flavor to your sandwiches.

Here’s what you’ll need to make the best sandwich sauce.

  • 2 teaspoons red wine vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/3 cup olive oil

Combine all ingredients except olive oil. Whisk together, then slowly whisk in olive oil until combined. Adjust seasonings to taste and store in the refrigerator.

I like to double this sub sauce recipe and store it in a mason jar. Just give it a good shake before you are ready to assemble your subs.

How To Make A Homemade Submarine

To make these homemade subs, gather together some crusty Italian rolls and savory Italian meats. I went with prosciutto, sweet sopressata and hot capicola.

Drizzle the submarine dressing on the rolls, then pile high with meat, roasted red peppers, spicy baby arugula, and of course Land O Lakes® 4 Cheese Italian Blend.

These subs, and especially the homemade sub sauce, were hands-down amazing! Since the cheese blend combines Asiago, Romano, Parmesan and American cheeses, its rich, strong flavor paired beautifully with the rest of the sandwich.

So, if you need to find me the rest of the summer, I will be lounging on my back porch. Probably enjoying this sandwich… or a stack of delicious Land O’Lakes cheese.
