These simple Italian submarine sandwiches with homemade sub sauce are perfect for summer. The tangy submarine dressing is easy to make and big on flavor.

Sandwich, Submarine, or Hoagie?
No matter what you call it, this Italian classic is needed in your recipe repertoire. And I’ll tell you how to make sub sauce that rivals your local sub shop.
Italian sandwiches are perfect for the beach, summer picnics, game days, and more.
I used a selection of delicious Italian meats, roasted red peppers, spicy baby arugula, homemade Italian sub dressing, and provolone cheese.
Submarine Dressing Recipe
Homemade sub sauce is easy to make and adds a nice burst of Italian herb flavor to your sandwiches.
Here’s what you’ll need to make the best sandwich sauce.
- red wine vinegar
- Dijon mustard
- dried Italian seasoning
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/3 cup olive oil
Combine all ingredients except olive oil. Whisk together, then slowly whisk in olive oil until combined. Adjust seasonings to taste and store them in the refrigerator.
You can also double this sub sauce and store it refrigerated in a Mason jar. Just give it a good shake before drizzling over your sub!

How To Make A Homemade Submarine
Gather some crusty Italian rolls and savory Italian meats to make these homemade subs. I went with prosciutto, sweet sopressata and hot capicola.
Drizzle the submarine dressing on the rolls, then pile high with meat, roasted red peppers, spicy baby arugula, and provolone cheese.
These subs, and especially the homemade sub sauce, were hands-down outstanding!
If you need to find me the rest of the summer, I will be lounging on my back porch eating this sandwich on repeat.
