I know there are a lot of opinions surrounding donuts and whether or not they should be baked or fried BUT I’m a fan of both.
That’s right. I’ll take my donuts in any given form.
On the plus side, if you bake them your house won’t smell like grease. Which is honestly a huge plus in my book.
These baked apple cider donuts are made with warm fall spices and flavor-packed apple cider.
I rolled my donuts in cinnamon sugar but you can feel free to leave them plain, sprinkle with powder sugar, or top with a glaze.

What are baked donuts?
Baked donuts are a cake style donut that are baked in a special donut pan.
They bake up tender with a delicate crumb and in this case are flavored with apple pie spice and apple cider.
Traditional donuts come in cake and yeast form and are typically fried.
How do I make baked apple cider donuts?
You’ll need to gather a few simple ingredients that might already be hanging out in your pantry!
The biggest thing you need to remember is that this recipe calls for apple cider NOT apple cider vinegar. These 2 ingredients cannot be used interchangeably and if you use vinegar it will ruin the taste of these donuts and leave them unedible.
Here is a list of needed ingredients:
- All purpose flour – this is your average flour you likely use for most baked goods.
- Granulated sugar – just a fancy term from typcial white sugar.
- Baking powder – this helps to give your donuts the rise they need to bake up fluffy and delicious.
- Apple pie spice – a delicious mix of fall spices that work well apple desserts.
- Egg – this adds structure, leavening, and flavor to help elevate baked goods.
- Whole milk – I prefer whole milk because the fat content and creaminess of the milk work really well in baked goods.
- Apple cider – this can be found in the refridgerated section of the grocery store typcially in the produce aisle near where you find fresh pressed juices and juice blends.
- Vegetable oil – you want to make sure to use a nice neutral oil if you don’t have any vegetable oil on hand.
- Vanilla extract – if you don’t have any vanilla extract on hand you can also use vanilla bean paste for an added omph of vanilla flavor.
What is apple pie spice?
Apple pie spice is a bought blend of spices that work well for apple dishes and baked goods.
The blend I typically buy combines cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
Some blends may also add clove and cardamom.
All of these flavors work well with apples and you can buy according to the flavors you enjoy.
How long will apple cider donuts stay fresh?
These donuts will stay fresh for up to 3 days if stored in an air tight container.
However, in my personal opinion, they are best enjoyed the day of baking.
Can I freeze baked donuts?
Yes!
You’ll want to keep the donuts plain (aka: don’t roll in cinnamon sugar or sprinkle with powdered sugar) and lay them out in a flat layer in a freezer safe bag and freeze for up to 3 months.
To reheat you can let them defrost on the counter or toast up lightly in a toast oven.
