I have a real sweet spot for margaritas. They always remind me of my dad, even though he has likely never made a margarita with blood oranges and ginger. He is more of a Classic Margarita kind of guy.

However, I know he would love this marg. He pretty much loves anything with tequila.

I made this margarita in 2017 (I’m rewriting it in 2024) and used an agave/stevia blend syrup. However, I’m unsure if that product exists anymore, so I’m using just regular agave syrup now. Feel free to use your favorite sweetener syrup for this cocktail.

This cocktail combines the delicious flavor of blood oranges with the slightly spicy punch of freshly grated ginger. It’s packed with flavor!

You can typically find blood oranges from December through April. They are a delicious winter citrus that should not be overlooked!

They are fantastic in margaritas and savory dishes like my Blood Orange Thyme Roasted Chicken.

To rim my glass I used kosher salt mixed with lime and blood orange zest. It’s unnecessary (plain kosher salt will work), but it has a nice, lovely flavor.

How to make a blood orange margarita

What I love most about making margaritas is that they are easy! Just a few minutes of juicing and shaking, and boom—a delicious cocktail!

  1. Add tequila, blood orange juice, lime juice, ginger, and agave syrup in a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  2. Shake, shake, shake until cold and combined.
  3. Pour into a salt-rimmed glass and garnish with a slice of blood orange and a sprig of fresh mint.

My Pro Tips

Margarita Recipe Tips

  • Use fresh limes for juicing. The flavor is fresh and tart compared to bottled.
  • You will find fresh blood oranges between December and April.
  • This margarita can be made with silver or gold tequila. Use what you have on hand and what you prefer.
  • To make it a frozen margarita, add the mix to a blender with ice until smooth and slushy-like in consistency.
  • Add more agave if you want a sweeter cocktail.

FAQ’s

Yes! Add your mixture to a high-powered blender with ice and blend until smooth and frosty.

Yes, but it’s not going to taste the same. Regular oranges tend to be sweeter than blood oranges. Plus, blood oranges hint at tart fruit like raspberry or cranberry.

Yes, but it may make the drink sweeter and won’t taste like what you see here. Blood oranges do have a slightly different flavor than regular oranges.

You can use whatever you have on hand, but they have a different flavor. I used gold for this aged recipe, so it’s slightly sweeter with a hint of caramel flavor from the barrel aging. Silver is aged in stainless steel tanks with a more peppery and clean tequila flavor.
