Hooray for apple season!

I haven’t been apple picking yet because the local farm I LOVE charges mad money to just pick the apples.

I’m not paying $5 PER PERSON to go into an orchard, pick the apples, pay for the apples and deal with the massive amount of city people in their $400 boots picking apples and pretending to be country folk.

Can you tell I’m bitter?

I just want to pick apples in silence without paying a fee to enter the grounds. Is this too much to ask for? Probably.

So in the meantime, I just go to the farm and grab a bag of pre-picked apples and devour them in the silence of my home.

Also, these cinnamon apple streusel bars are perfect for apple season.

A cross between Dutch apple pie and a traditional bar dessert.

The crust is a combination of apple pie spice, graham cracker crumbs, flour, brown sugar, and melted butter.

It’s sturdy, and crunchy and pairs perfectly with the slightly sweetened spiced apples.

Oh and that glaze!

It’s not just your typical everyday glaze. NOPE. It’s a mix of vanilla bean paste and maple extract and it’s super good!

It was so good I wanted to drink it but resisted the urge.

I mean, I can’t just be sitting home on my couch doing shots of vanilla bean maple glaze.

I mean, I could. But I’m pretty sure my sugar numbers would skyrocket and I would go into a sugar coma.

  1. awesome, awesome recipe–the fact that it’s more streusel than anything else appeals to me greatly. 🙂 thanks for sharing some things about yourself–i was just considering the fact that nermal is a terrific name for a cat (yes, i loved the garfield cartoon).

  2. Jessica: I found her lovely blog through tastespotting. I’m so glad I did!

    Karen: They are phenomenal…very tasty!

Blond Duck: They probably would be a big hit. I guess I’m always used to the “traditional” cookies and candies. I see no reason these could not fit right in 🙂

Mimi: The good thing is now you can find decent apples year long. I just love all the flavor they can add to a dish.

    Christine: Thanks!

Karine: I love to share 🙂

Jen: Haha I have a few summer recipes too. I guess I just have to wait to put them up on the blog. Your welcome for the award!

Barbara: Thanks about the picture. I have been working hard to get better 🙂

Reeni: Exactly! It is like a dessert pizza. As soon as I read that I had to agree.

Chaya: Hooray Chanukah is almost here. I need to get on a recipe. I’m not sure how to change your blog name. When you leave me a comment you could always just fill in the information slot with the Sweet and Savory information instead of the Chaya CC. The beginning of next week I will let readers know to come on over to your page for the Chanukah giveaway.

Grace: Streusel deserves a staring role 🙂 I’m so glad you know where Nermal comes from. Most people look at me like I’m strange. All I can think to myself is “have you never seen Garfield?”

  3. I’m a sucker for all things apple and cinnamon. These look droolworthy. I would love to pull up a chair at your holiday table, for sure.

  4. This is such a gorgeous recipe! (And where I live apples are still $.29 a pound so I’m still stocking up weekly!) If I make this I’ll let you know how it turns out…although I can probably guarantee that it won’t be as beautiful as yours! 😉

  5. The streusel bars look amazing! Congrats on your award and you’re so sweet to share it with me, thank you so much!!!

  6. Yum! Those streusel bars look so tasty! You can’t go wrong with apples and cinnamon. Congrats on your award!
