When it comes to side salads, the crunchier, the better.

So, naturally, I’m a big fan of traditional (and delicious) creamy coleslaw, especially when it’s made even easier by picking up a bag of pre-shredded coleslaw mix. For the dressing, I combined mayonnaise, sour cream, apple cider vinegar, sugar, Dijon mustard, and a few dried spices.

This dish is so easy to whip up you’ll wonder why you haven’t made it sooner!

Great for cookouts, BBQs, and holiday get-togethers.

Trust me; you’re going to love this coleslaw. If you’re a big flavor fan, pile it on my BBQ Shredded Beef (Sandwiches)!

Ingredients to make Creamy Coleslaw on a table.

Creamy coleslaw ingredients

  • Shredded cabbage
  • Shredded red cabbage
  • Shredded carrots
  • Mayonnaise
  • Sour cream
  • Granulated sugar
  • Dijon mustard
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Kosher salt
  • Black pepper
  • Celery seed

How to make

Add the shredded vegetables to a large bowl and set aside. In a smaller mixing bowl, mix the mayonnaise, sour cream, granulated sugar, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, kosher salt, black pepper, and celery seed.

Pour the dressing over the shredded vegetables and stir to combine.

Cover and sit in the fridge for at least 4 hours before serving. I prefer letting it sit overnight, giving the slaw plenty of time for the flavors to meld.

Tips and Tricks

Semi-homemade ease – take it easy by buying bagged shredded coleslaw mix. It cuts down on chopping time, and you won’t be left with any leftover cabbages or carrots.

Make ahead – you can easily make this 12-24 hours before serving. Remember, if you go to an outdoor BBQ or potluck, you’ll want to keep this on ice.

Switch up the sweetener – You can use brown sugar or honey instead of granulated sugar.

What to serve with coleslaw

This creamy coleslaw is great as a topping or a side dish. It’s served here on my BBQ Shredded Beef (Sandwiches), but it’s also great on Instant Pot Chicken Tacos or served alongside my Air Fryer Hot Dogs.
