Have you always wondered if you could air fry hot dogs?

Well, good news. You can, and they are delicious!

In fact, these air fryer hot dogs are my new favorite way to make myself a delicious dog!

Yes, I know grilled hot dogs are still one of the best ways to cook a hot dog, BUT sometimes it’s too hot to grill. Or, honestly, sometimes I don’t want to go out and heat the grill.

Since I got my air fryer, I’m pretty on board with cooking everything in the air fryer.

I also add my cooked hot dogs back into the bun and toast it all for a few minutes so my bun gets just slightly crisp.

My favorite hot dog buns are brioche buns, but honestly, any bun you use will toast up nicely.

You’re going to love this air fryer hot dogs recipe! Trust me!

Air fryer hot dog ingredients

Making the best air fryer hot dogs doesn’t require a lot of ingredients. It’s only two!

  • Hot dogs – I like to use an all-beef hot dog, but whatever your favorite happens to be will work here.
  • Hot dog buns – My all-time favorite is split top brioche buns.
  • Toppings of choice – ketchup, mustard, relish, onions, etc.

Air Fryer FAQ

An air fryer is a tabletop convection oven.
It mimics the outcome of a deep-fat fryer but without oil. Hot hair is moved around via a fan that quickly and crisply cooks the food. The two most common air fryers you’ll see are basket-style (that is what I have) or convection/toaster oven-style. There are pluses to both, but I prefer my basket style.

I prefer the basket-style air fryer as it’s smaller and takes up less room than the toaster oven-style air fryer. My biggest tip regarding air fryers is to pick a style that will work best for your family and the amount of food you will cook. My large basket-style air fryer can cook up to 12 wings, 2-4 servings of french fries, etc., which works well for my household.

The answer to this will depend on your brand. It is ALWAYS best to double-check all brand recommendations by reading your user manual or visiting their website and seeing if they address this question on their site. My air fryer brand is basket style, and the outer and inner baskets are dishwasher safe.

How to cook hot dogs in the air fryer?

Looking for the easiest way to cook up a hot dog?

Look no further than these air fryer hot dogs! They cook up crispy and delicious every. single. time.

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 400 degrees F. My air fryer has a preheat button that sets the machine to 400 degrees F and preheats for 5 minutes.
  2. After preheating the air fryer, add your hot dogs in a single layer to the air fryer basket.
  3. Cook for 4 minutes at 400 degrees F. If you do not plan on putting your hot dog on a bun, you can cook it a few minutes longer, depending on how crispy you like your hot dogs.
  4. Take your hot dogs out of the air fryer, add them to a bun, place back into the basked, and toast them for another minute in the air fryer.

What type of hot dog is best for air frying?

Many types of hot dogs are on the market, but my favorites are all beef hotdogs.

I especially love hot dogs that come in casings, so they snap.

However, this recipe will work perfectly in chicken, turkey, pork, and vegan hot dogs.

A few brands I like are Vienna Beef, Hebrew National, Nathans, and Boars Head.

Best hot dog buns

This is a personal preference, but I enjoy brioche buns. They are buttery, toast up wonderfully, and have a delicious temperature.

Other options are whole wheat, white, split top, or the traditional side cut.

What other ways can I cook hot dogs?

If you don’t have an air fryer, you can always cook your hot dogs by boiling them in water, cooking them in a skillet, or putting them on the grill.

Side dishes to serve

These hots dogs with everything from potatoes, to beans, to chips, to coleslaw. Here are a few delicious recipes that will work perfectly!

Favorite toppings for hot dogs

Hot dog toppings are a very personal choice, but my favorite is yellow mustard and ketchup. If you wanted to go a little tropical you could try spooning on Mango Habanero Salsa with a sprinkling of chopped white onion and tomatoes.

Some other great topping ideas are:

  • pickles relish
  • spicy brown mustard
  • chili
  • cheddar cheese
  • jalapenos
  • crumbled bacon
  • salsa
  • sauerkraut
  • bbq sauce
  • caramelized onions

Are air fryer hot dogs good?

Yes! Not only do they cook up quickly, but they give the hot dog a nice crisp to the outside skin. And they taste fabulous so you’re sure to love them too!

Storage and leftovers

If you have any leftover hot dogs you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
