Ok, I have never actually done a store bought chicken broth taste test before and man oh man was it 100% worth it! Now I want to taste test all. the. things. I was FLOORED at how different the same product tasted between brands. Everything from deep roasted chicken flavor (to be expected) to a brand that literally tasted and smelled like green onions. Spoiler alert: I do not want my chicken broth to taste like green onions and that brand did not rank high.

Now, if you’re on team “I make my own chicken broth and stock THANK YOU VERY MUCH!” Well, good for you! I make my own sometimes too! However, I’m also a human who likes that I can run to the store and buy chicken broth for soup at any time of the day. That’s why I decided to take an in-depth look at a few of the most popular brands I see in my store.

As you can see from the above photo just because it says chicken broth it doesn’t mean they all taste or even look the same. The broth I tested ranged from dark golden brown to light yellow and cloudy. I assumed the darker colors would give me the strongest chicken flavor and while I was right about one of the broths I was 100% wrong about the other.

I guess you can’t judge a broth by its color?

Ok, so the clear winner of the store bought chicken broth taste test was the Zoup! Good, Really Good™ Chicken Broth. I worked with their vegetable broth last year when I made my vegan red curry pumpkin noodle soup. I knew I was a fan of their vegetable broth so I wasn’t super shocked when their chicken broth came out on top. I loved that it was straight up roast chicken flavor. No extra vegetable or herb flavor, just chicken.

I think the thing that won me over the most was the fact that I know when I’m looking to add the richness of chicken to a recipe this broth will not let me down. Not only would I be happy to add it to my lemon chicken farro vegetable soup but I would straight up drink it out of a mug on a cold day. Trust me, I don’t say that about just any broth. When I was a kid my mom couldn’t even get me to eat chicken noodle soup when I was sick because I found it salty, bland and boring. If she made that soup with Zoup! Good, Really Good™ Chicken Broth that would have been a non-issue.

PLUS it’s cooked in small batches, low in calories, paleo friendly, and completely free of hormones, gluten, GMO’s, trans fat and saturated fat. Oh, and since Zoup! got its start as a chain of soup restaurants, of course, they would make an awesome broth. Learn more at www.zoupbroth.com and check them out You can check out Zoup! on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter! If you’d like to try the broth for yourself, here’s a coupon for $1 off any jar.
