If you ask me, there’s nothing better than the delicious smells of apples and cinnamon coming from the kitchen on a fall day.

This apple streusel bread has a moist and tender crumb, using butter and common baking ingredients (flour, baking powder, eggs, and salt,) mixed with warm cinnamon and diced juicy apples.

And don’t forget the best part: the sugary and crunchy streusel topping! (It’s similar to the same topping you find on Amish cinnamon bread.)

It’s the perfect slice with a cup of coffee for breakfast, brunch with friends, or as a sweet treat for dessert.

This apple streusel bread is truly a slice of autumn in every bite!

Ingredients for apple streusel bread

For bread:

  • All-purpose flour – A common baking ingredient that will make up the batter of our apple streusel bread.
  • Diced apples – Diced apples will add bites of apple goodness throughout.
  • Ground cinnamon – Ground cinnamon will add warmth to the apple streusel bread.
  • Baking powder – Baking powder will keep the bread fluffy and light.
  • Kosher salt – Kosher salt is necessary in baked goods to help balance all of the flavors and cut through the sweetness.
  • Eggs – Eggs will help all of the ingredients emulsify and blend together.
  • Unsalted butter – Unsalted butter will give the apple streusel bread moisture and necessary fat.
  • Granulated sugar – Granulated sugar will add sweetness to the apple streusel bread.
  • Milk – Milk will help the batter reach the perfect consistency and also add moisture.
  • Vanilla extract – Vanilla extract will add a subtle vanilla flavor.

For streusel:

  • Unsalted butter – Unsalted butter will help the ingredients for the streusel stick together to form the delicious crumbles.
  • All-purpose flour – All-purpose flour will make up the majority of the crumble dough.
  • Ground cinnamon – Ground cinnamon will add a warm cinnamon flavor to the streusel.
  • Kosher salt – Kosher salt is necessary in baked goods to help balance all of the flavors and cut through the sweetness.
  • Brown sugar – Brown sugar will add a deep, caramelized sweetness to the streusel.

Variations

This apple streusel bread is 100% delicious on its own, but it’s always fun to add a little bit extra. Here are some great ideas to change it up:

  • Serve the slices with fresh whipped cream, or a drizzle of vanilla glaze.
  • Add some chopped pecans or walnuts to the batter.
  • To turn it into a decadent dessert, serve alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Apple varieties

In your local grocery store, there’s usually a huge variety of apples to choose from!

So how do you know which ones will be best for this apple streusel bread?

My favorite type of apple to use for this recipe is Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Fuji because they are the perfect sweet and tangy cooking apple.

I would stay away from McIntosh, Gala, or Red Delicious. These are often mealy apples, and not very good to use in this application.

Freeze for later

This apple streusel bread can be made ahead of time and frozen!

Simply bake as directed, and cool completely.

Wrap the cooled apple streusel bread in plastic wrap, and then a layer of aluminum foil, and place in the freezer for up to 3 months.

To thaw, simply leave it at room temperature.

Storage and leftovers

Any leftover apple streusel bread can be stored on the counter for up to 3 days.

Ingredients

For bread:

For streusel topping:

Instructions

For bread:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and spray a 9×5 loaf pan with non-stick spray and set aside.
  • In a medium-sized mixing bowl whisk together all-purpose flour, ground cinnamon, baking soda, and kosher salt, and set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl with a hand-held mixer or the bowl of an electric mixer, add granulated sugar and unsalted butter and cream together until light in color and fluffy.
  • Add in eggs and incorporate fully.
  • Mix in milk and vanilla extract.
  • Fold in apples until incorporated.
  • Pour half of the batter into the prepared pan, add half of the streusel topping on top of half the batter, carefully add the remaining half of the batter to the top of the streusel, and spread evenly over the top.
  • Add the remaining streusel topping over the top of the batter.
  • Bake for about 60 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean when tested in the center of the bread. A few dried breadcrumbs on the bread is ok but you should see no liquid batter on the toothpick.
  • Let the bread rest for 15 minutes in the pan and then remove the bread from the pan and let cool on a wire rack.
  • When fully cooled, slice and enjoy.

For streusel:

  • Add all ingredients to a mixing bowl and either using a fork, or your hands, mix together until crumbly and combined. This mixture will resemble wet sand.
  • Set aside until ready to be used.
