I have a confession – I LOVE WHITE SWEET POTATOES!

Don’t get me wrong, I like regular orange sweet potatoes too but white sweet potatoes are so deliciously fantastic!

They aren’t as easy to find as your typical orange sweet potatoes but when I do find them I scoop them all up!

But, don’t worry if you can’t find white sweet potatoes at your store. This recipe works perfectly with normal everyday sweet potatoes. I promise.

The glaze is made out of sweet honey, olive oil, cinnamon (or pumpkin pie spice!), and just a touch of fresh thyme leaves.

This dish is slightly sweet with just the right touch of warm spices.

Ingredients for roasted sweet potatoes

  • White sweet potatoes – I really love white sweet potatoes in this dish but if you can’t find them you can easily subsitute with orange sweet potatoes.
  • Honey – Use a delicious local honey if you can find it. I also like to use a lighter honey as it’s not as strong and bitter as dark honey.
  • Olive oil – This helps keep the sweet potatoes from sticking while baking while also adding flavor to the potatoes and glaze.
  • Fresh thyme leaves – I love the addition of fresh herbs to cut through the sweetness of the honey and cinnamon.
  • Cinnamon – This adds a touch of warm flavor. If you want even more warm flavor try using pumpkin pie spice.
  • Kosher salt – Just a touch of kosher salt to bring out all the flavors of the ingredients.
  • Black pepper – If you want things even spicier try adding a dash of cayenne pepper.

What is the difference between white and orange sweet poatoes?

White sweet potatoes are slightly sweeter and less creamy than the traditional orange sweet potato.

They also contain less beta carotene than the orange variety.

Tips for roasting sweet potoates

  1. Preheating – Make sure to preheat you oven so the potatoes all cook evenly.
  2. Size matters – Try to keep all your sweeet poatoes pieces around the same size so they all roast up perfectly at the same time.
  3. Keep it nonstick – Make sure to line your sheet pan with parchment paper or a Silpat liner so your sticky glazed potatoes don’t stick.
  4. Gentle roasting – Make sure to gently toss while you’re roasting so no one side gets too brown.

I was given a large and medium sweet potato and was clueless as to what to do with them and was further surprised that they were white when I peeled them. I tried your recipe but cut back on the ingredients due to the smaller amount of potatoes. DELICIOUS!

  1. I made this for Thanksgiving and it came out great! Everyone loved it. It was delicious, not overly sweet, just perfect. I always hated the typical sweet potatoe casserole with marshmallows my whole life and was searching for something different and found this. I’m so happy I did!!! Thank you

  2. Didn’t know what to do with white sweet potatoes and found this recipe. I adjusted it in only one respect–in addition to the pumpkin spice, I added a tiny bit of cardamom….delicious!

  3. I made a small batch (one pound of white sweet potatoes, half recipe for the glaze) added cayenne pepper for a subtitle kick… OMG!

    1. Hi Paul – I actually use pumpkin pie spice which includes cinnamon. Feel free to replace that spice mix with the same amount of cinnamon.

  4. I didn’t know what to do with the white sweet potatoes I’d picked up, so I tried your recipe and it was amazing!! Thank you so much!
