Ingredients for French Onion dip
- Caramelized onion – I used sweet onions that were caramelized in butter. This creates a sweet and buttery caramelized onion PERFECT for this recipe!
- Sour cream – This is the base of the dip. I used full fat but you can substitute with low fat if desired.
- Cream cheese – I love the richness cream cheese adds to the dip but you could also use mayonnaise or mascarpone cheese if you prefer.
- Garlic powder – Just a touch for added flavor. You can also use fresh in its place.
- Fresh parsley – This dip definitely needs some freshness and parsley is a great addition. You could also use chopped chives or green onions.
The best onions to use
There are lots of different onions in the store but my personal favorite for this dish is sweet onions. A few varieties of sweet onion you may see are Vidalia, Walla Walla, and Texas Spring Sweet.
If you cannot find sweet onions you can use yellow onions in their place.
What to serve with French onion dip
My personal favorite scooper for French onion dip is salty chips.
Kettle cooked, wavy, ruffled, whatever shape you want all taste great with this creamy dip.
If you’re looking for a healthier dipper try carrot or celery sticks.
Storing leftover dip
If you’re good at moderation and don’t eat all your dip in one sitting here are some tips on keeping it fresh!
I like to store any leftover dip in an airtight container and use it within 3 days.
You may notice some liquid sitting on top of the dip if it sits overnight but just give it a stir and it will incorporate perfectly fine.

French Onion Dip
Equipment
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 large sweet onions thinly sliced
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1-1/2 cups sour cream
- 2 ounces cream cheese at room temperature
- 2 teaspoons minced fresh chives
- 1 teaspoon fresh parsley chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Heat a large heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-low heat.
- Add the butter and allow it to melt, about 2 minutes.
- Add the sliced onions and kosher salt. Mix so all of the onions become evenly coated with butter.
- Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, for 20-25 minutes or until they are dark golden brown. If they start to stick to the bottom of the pan at any time, add a few tablespoons of water. Make sure not to rush the caramelization process and keep the heat set at medium-low.
- Once the onions are caramelized, allow them to cool to room temperature, about 20 minutes.
- In a large bowl, mix the sour cream and softened cream cheese together until smooth. This can also be done in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment.
- Next add the caramelized onions, chives, parsley, and garlic powder. Stir to combine and season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve the french onion dip with fresh vegetables or chips and enjoy.
- Store any leftover dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days.
