During the winter I LOVE all things hot chocolate related.

And I’m talking REAL hot chocolate.

Not that powdered stuff you mix with water.

I’m not really anti packet hot chocolate but at least mix it with warmed milk and not water. Water + powdered hot chocolate = sadness. Milk + powdered hot chocolate = acceptable in a pinch.

Personally, the amount of time it would take me to warm the milk and mix the powdered cocoa I could make this easy Vitamix hot chocolate.

You guys, it’s made in the Vitamix or any other high-powered blender you have like a Blendtec.

Sadly you do need a high-powered blender as it’s strong enough to actually warm the milk and melt the chocolate.

A normal blender cannot warm the mixture like a Vitamix or Blendtec.

Craving something even more rich and creamy and packed full of chocolate flavor? Try this cozy Brazilian hot chocolate!

Using a Vitamix or Blendtec to make hot chocolate

Yes, that’s why I made this whole recipe!

I know it sounds strange but I swear it works!

And the best part is that you can mix it up to give it just the flavors you love.

Cooking hot chocolate in a Vitamix

Yes!

Basically, a Vitamix is so powerful that it uses friction heat to heat up what you’re making in the blender.

This is why it’s possible to not just make hot chocolate but also to make soup, and even lemon curd with your high-powered blender.

And you don’t even need to heat up your ingredients before you throw them into the blender container.

I added all my ingredients into the canister at cold and pantry temperatures.

It’s so amazing how it works.

Don’t own a high powered blender

If you do not have a high powdered blender do not try and make this hot chocolate in your normal blender.

It simply will not heat the way it does in the Vitamix.

But you can still use this delicious recipe!

Just take all the ingredients put them into a pot and cook over medium heat on the stove.

Using Vitamix to make hot chocolate

While you can play around with the ingredients my go-to recipe includes whole milk, semi-sweet chocolate, instant espresso powder, vanilla extract, and just a touch of cinnamon.

I think the addition of instant espresso powder really pumps up the chocolate flavor but if you’re making this close to bedtime you can always leave it out.

You can also use instant coffee if you don’t have instant espresso powder.

Substitutions and additions

You can always add different flavors to jazz up this hot chocolate recipe.

One of my favorite ways is by adding in a little orange extract, or even just a touch of peppermint extract.

You can take out the cinnamon or use pumpkin pie spice instead.

Trust me, you can make this with a bunch of different flavors and it will still turn out perfectly frothy and delicious!

  1. Oh. My. GAWD. ( I know shocker I didn’t say BJ right?) I’m not gonna mention BJ, because ever since he lost his mom in the tragic Vitamix accident of 08, we just don’t talk about VM and BJ in the same sentence… it was traumatic!

Anyhow! Congratulations on the new addition to the family! Oh I am so excited for you, are you having a shower? There is nothing like the day you realize what magic you and Vitamix can make… oh sweet sweet memories I have of him from my CIA days. 😉

I can’t wait to come over and see the new little one!!! xoxoxo

  2. Please, please, please be my Vitamix buddy! I bought one right after Christmas and I’m obsessed! I need someone who shares my love of all things slushy and frothy. I’m planning to do a post on my blog about my Vitamix and I’m probably going to create a new recipe category. Keep the recipes coming! I’m telling everyone that they’re worth the investment.

    1. I’m soooooo your Vitamix buddy! I’m thinking of making a new category too. There is so much to be made….I can’t wait to see your tortilla soup recipe!

    1. Even though you have a Blendtec there is no reason you cannot get a Vitamix 🙂 Then when it’s margarita night you can have both going!

    1. I bought the model that fits under the cabinets! It’s the 750 🙂 It still has a 64 ounce canister but it’s shorter and fatter than the old style.

  3. SO.COOL. I have been wishing for a vitamix for FOREVER.

And I LOVE those starbucks cups. i want one of those also. 😛

  4. Oh I am so jealous of you having a vitamix! one quick question – where do you find espresso powder? I can never find it!

    1. Hi Megan 🙂 King Arthur Flour makes a great espresso powder and I have also found it in the coffee section near the instant coffee. Hope you find it soon!

  5. I am going to go make this right now! I was just thinking of making some coffee but this sounds better!

Megan, King Arthur Flour makes a really nice espresso powder. It’s all I use in my baking. I’m going to try it in my hot chocolate and I will report back with my results.

    1. Hi Dina! I just recommended the espresso powder from KAF to Megan and then I realized you did too! I’m so happy you gave the hot chocolate a try and liked it. Sadly I’m at work right now or I would totally make a batch 🙂

  6. I just tried this and it was great! I love that it’s made with ingredients that I have on hand. I only have lowfat milk and half & half, so I mixed them in place of whole milk. I added 1/2 tsp of my King Arthur Flour espresso powder and I left out the cinnamon. My husband and I loved this. So rich and delicious. A nice treat on a Friday afternoon. 🙂

I love the idea of a whole section dedicated to Vitamix recipes. I know I’m not using mine to it’s full capacity.
