Are you a lover of vintage recipes?

Maybe you’re just looking for a recipe to use leftover ham?

Well, this ham salad recipe is just what you need!

Delicious minced ham mixed with vegetables, mayonnaise, pickle relish, and spices. It’s simple to make and ready in 10 minutes with zero cooking time! Serve on soft white bread or buttery crackers, or add it to a green leafy salad.

In a true confessional, my husband LOVES eating ham salad on hot dog rolls. He swears it’s the best way to eat it. Who am I to argue? We are all free to love what we love.

Now, to get this finely chopped look, I like to use a food processor. However, if you don’t have a food processor, you can chop the heck out of it with a sharp kitchen knife.

Either way will work fine, but a food processor takes much less time.

I also used my leftover 3-Ingredient Instant Pot Ham.

Ingredients for ham salad

  • Ham – Use leftover ham and chop it up in the food processor!
  • Celery – I love the crunchy texture celery brings to the recipe.
  • Red onion – I use a little red onion because I like the flavor and the crunch.
  • Sweet pickle relish – Optional, but I love the light sweetness it gives the ham salad.
  • Mayonnaise – This holds the salad together! My favorite is Duke’s.
  • Spices – I’m not using anything fancy, just a little black pepper. If your ham isn’t salty enough, you can add kosher salt.

How to make

I LOVE meat salads. I know that sounds gross to say in that way, but what do we call salads made of protein? You know, like egg salad, tuna salad, chicken salad, etc.

FAQ’s

Store any leftover ham salad in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.

Properly stored meat salad should be good for 4-5 days.

The best ham for this recipe is leftover Easter or Christmas ham, diced ham steak, or purchased chunked ham.

I like to use thicker chunked ham so I can get it just the right texture.

I would stay away from thinly sliced deli ham to make this recipe.

My favorite way to eat ham salad is spread between 2 slices of soft, squishy white bread. My family also traditionally eats this recipe this way.

Other great options are serving it with your favorite cracker (butter and club crackers are my favorites) or spooning it over leafy greens.
