What is Rumchata?

Rumchata is a cream liqueur that combines rum, cream, cinnamon, vanilla, and sugar.

It can be found in most liquor stores right next to the rum!

But if you can’t find it, feel free to substitute your favorite spiced rum; you’ll still have the same spiced notes and sweet vanilla notes.

Craving creamy, boozy drinks? You have to try this homemade Irish cream or this rumchata white Russian!

Where can I find dulce de leche?

Dulce de leche can be found in either the baking aisle or the international foods aisle of most major grocery stores or online!

Serving suggestions

This spiked hot dulce de leche is perfect on its own, but if you’re looking to add some bites to it, my favorite is these crispy air fryer cinnamon sugar knots

Dunking these crispy, warm, cinnamony knots into the luscious, spiked hot dulce de leche makes for a heavenly dessert!

Storage and leftovers

Unfortunately, these spiked hot dulce de leche drinks are best served immediately after making, so it’s best to just make as much as you need at the time.

Ingredients

For rim:

  • 1 tablespoon dulce de leche
  • ¾ teaspoon whole milk
  • Pinch of kosher salt

For drink:

  • ¼ cup dulce de leche
  • 1-¼ cup whole milk, divided
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • 3- ounces RumChata, or another horchata-flavored liqueur
  • Whipped cream, optional
  • Sprinkle of ground cinnamon, optional
  • Cinnamon stick, for garnish, optional

Instructions

To rim the mug:

  • Mix together dulce de leche and milk until smooth.
  • Using a spoon, transfer a bit of the thinned dulce de leche onto the rim of a 15-ounce heat-proof mug. Cover the rim as much or as little as you’d like. I like to put on enough to drip down the sides of my mug.
  • Sprinkle a pinch of sea salt over the dulce de leche-covered rim.

For the Spiked Hot Dulce de Leche:

  • In a small saucepan over medium heat, add dulce de leche and ¼ cup whole milk. Whisk until smooth.
  • Add a pinch of sea salt and pour in the remaining milk. Stir to mix.
  • Allow the mixture to heat up, preferably somewhere between 160 degrees F and 185 degrees F. Remove from heat.
  • Stir in horchata liqueur and pour into the prepared mug.
  • Serve topped with whipped cream, and a sprinkle of ground cinnamon, and garnish with a cinnamon stick, if you’d like.
