Ingredients for air fryer pumpkin fries

  • Sugar pumpkin – These small, sweet pumpkins make the perfect fries.
  • Spices – I’ve used a blend of cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper to enhance and bring out the flavors of the sugar pumpkin.
  • Olive oil – The fat of choice to help crisp up our fries.

Squash variety

I’ve decided to use sugar pumpkins for these air-fried pumpkin fries, but this recipe would work well with any winter squash, such as butternut, acorn, or kabocha squash.

Variations and adaptations

Looking to make these fries a little different?

Here are a few fun ideas to change up this recipe:

  • Make them sweet – Sprinkle the fries with cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice. For extra sweetness, you could also glaze in a little maple syrup near the end of the cooking time.
  • Get cheesy – Toss these pumpkin fries in Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and Parmesan cheese. Delicious and cheesy!
  • Keep it simple – Want to keep the flavor simple? Try just a simple sprinkle of sea salt.

Air Fryer FAQ

An air fryer is a tabletop convection oven.
It mimics the outcome of a deep-fat fryer but without oil. Hot hair is moved around via a fan that quickly and crisply cooks the food. The two most common air fryers you’ll see are basket-style (that is what I have) or convection/toaster oven-style. There are pluses to both, but I prefer my basket style.

I prefer the basket-style air fryer as it’s smaller and takes up less room than the toaster oven-style air fryer. My biggest tip regarding air fryers is to pick a style that will work best for your family and the amount of food you will cook. My large basket-style air fryer can cook up to 12 wings, 2-4 servings of french fries, etc., which works well for my household.

The answer to this will depend on your brand. It is ALWAYS best to double-check all brand recommendations by reading your user manual or visiting their website and seeing if they address this question on their site. My air fryer brand is basket style, and the outer and inner baskets are dishwasher safe.

Storage and leftovers

Unfortunately, these air-fried pumpkin fries are best enjoyed on the day off and will get soggy if stored in the refrigerator afterward.

Instructions

  • Preheat the air fryer to 360 degrees F according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Wash and dry the pumpkin. Cut the pumpkin in half. Cut out the tops and scoop out the seeds.
  • Cut each half into 1-inch slices and carefully peel off the skins.
  • In a large bowl combine the pumpkin, oil, and spices.
  • Massage the pumpkin to ensure they are coated entirely. However, you can add more seasonings once the fries are cooked, especially salt.
  • Once the air fryer is preheated, in batches, arrange the fries in the basket in one single layer and air fry for 15 minutes, flipping the fries halfway through.
  • The fries should be crispy and cooked through. If by this time the fries are not crispy, fry for a few extra minutes.
  • Sprinkle with salt and pepper right after cooking. Enjoy with dipping sauces of your choice.
